ARTWORK

as a commercial artist, the content of any given work is dictated by a specific target audience.  be it a line of skate and surf clothing designed for the 18-25 male demographic, or the opening title sequence to an art-house feature film, artistic expression comes in the form of creative problem-solving.  every job comes with it’s own set of CHALLENGES, and restrictions.  working within these parameters actually allows a certain freedom, since many of the decisions have already been defined by the needs of the client.  conversely, when creating art for the sole purpose of self-expression, i find myself art directing WITH UNYIELDING severity, questioning the validity of my own creations as pertaining to what we perceive as “fine art”.  it’s not enough to simply make things that are beAUTIFUL, OR INTERESTING.  WE’RE TRAINED TO BELIEVE THAT EACH PIECE NEED HAVE A GREATER PURPOSE FOR BEING.  i’m constantly striving to find balance between what I feel to be visually stimulating and conceptually sound.
